What is the Difference between Apostille and Consular Legalization?

Dealing with documents preparation in foreign institutions, we are faced with the necessity to give them legal force. With this inevitably emerge the concepts of "consular legalization" and "apostille". Uninitiated person is difficult enough to understand the niceties of one or another procedure, and to catch the difference between them. In fact, everything is easier.

In what cases do you need to affix apostille?

Stamp "apostille" on documents is a simplified method of registration of documents for their use abroad. This stamp is accepted by the countries-participants of the Hague Convention, which was signed in 1961. Since then, the list of countries-participants is constantly updated.

Mainly, apostille is affixed on document original or copy, but there are the countries, which accept only double apostille, this means that besides the stamp on the document original, it shall be translated into the language of the country, in which you are going, to notarize the translation and to apostille the translated paper.

Let’s summarize

As it was mentioned above, apostille is accepted only in the countries of the Hague Convention. If you submit in the embassy of the state, which has not signed the convention, only consular legalization will be suitable for you. The key difference consists that once apostilled document will be valid in all countries-participants of the Hague Convention, and document legalized in the embassy, becomes valid only in the country, the consulate of which certified it.
